Police are appealing to the public for surveillance or dash cam footage as part of their investigation into the death of a man in St. John's Thursday night.

The RNC was called to the area of Sunset Street and Della Drive in Goulds just after 10:30pm, to a report of a stabbing. Officers arrived to find a trail of blood and a 20-year-old man lying on the ground. He was taken to hospital by ambulance but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Investigators in the RNC's Major Crimes Unit are now working with the province's chief medical examiner to determine the man's cause of death.

"At this stage we are unable to confirm as to whether this was a random or targeted incident," media relations officer Cst. James Cadigan said in a press release. "We ask that all suspicious activity in our community be reported to the police."

He said officers are looking to speak with witnesses or anyone who may have any information that might help the investigation. They're also asking anyone who may have surveillance camera or dash cam footage captured in the area before police arrived to contact them at 729-8000 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS.

One man is dead following a stabbing in St. John’s late Thursday night.

The incident happened in the area of Della Drive and Sunset Street in the Goulds at approximately 10:30 p.m.

It appears the man, thought to be about 20 years old, was stabbed near a home on the corner of the two streets and that he was able to make his way to the front step of a home on Sunset where he was found by a resident.

Reports from the scene indicate the man had lost a significant amount of blood and there was a blood trail from the stabbing location to where he was eventually found.

When The Telegram arrived in the area, Royal Newfoundland Constabulary officers had the area cordoned off and a forensic identification officer was documenting the scene, taking photographs and bagging evidence.

No information was available as to whether there were any suspects.

More details will be provided as they become available.
