O'LEARY, P.E.I. — Coun. Darren MacKinnon’s pitch that the Town of O’Leary should take steps to become a carbon neutral community won the support of fellow councillors Wednesday night.

MacKinnon admitted he doesn’t know how the community could become carbon neutral but he suggested some sort of tie-in with the West Cape Wind Farm, just out the O’Leary Road, might be a starting point.

“Maybe there’s something neat here that could work,” he said.

He added that council should reach out to the provincial government for guidance on how to make it happen.

Fellow councillors chimed in with district heating and solar energy suggestions.

“One thing leads to another, right?” MacKinnon said, suggesting energy savings realized from carbon neutral projects could help fund other needs for the community, such as wishes expressed earlier in the meeting for creating a splash pad.
