There were no serious injuries after an SUV crashed into a ditch Friday night when the driver apparently swerved to avoid a moose.

The incident happened at about 9:30 p.m. on the Trans-Canada Highway just east of Paddy’s Pond near St. John’s. The SUV was headed westbound when it suddenly came upon a large bull moose standing in the middle of the road. As the driver swerved to avoid the huge animal, the vehicle clipped the moose with its side mirror before it crashed.

Emergency personnel were unable to locate the animal.

Westbound traffic was slowed until the scene could be cleared.
