NATO ships to visit Halifax and then take part in Cutlass Fury exercise

Eleven ships from various nations and over 2,500 international sailors will be Halifax as part of a visit of NATO warships. That event takes place Sept. 6 to Sept. 9.

The ships and crew will take part in the Cutlass Fury exercise off the coast of Nova Scotia starting Sept. 9.

When the ships leave for the exercise at 1:00 p.m. on Sept. 9 they will conduct a sail past from the Bedford Basin and along the downtown Halifax waterfront, according to the Royal Canadian Navy. Her Majesty’s Canadian Ship Ville de Québec will lead the sail past and fire its saluting guns as the ships sail out of the harbour. Royal Canadian Air Force aircraft will also fly over the area as the ships sail out of the harbour.

Cutlass Fury 2019 takes place from Sept. 9 to 20 in and around the maritime approaches and operation areas off the East Coast of Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. It will involve more than 2,800 participants from seven partner nations including Standing NATO Maritime Group 1, and include more than 20 ships and 36 aircraft. Cutlass Fury is a Canadian-led, multi-national, joint maritime exercise designed to promote and enhance regional cooperation in the Atlantic. This year’s exercise will include participation from the Royal Canadian Navy, Royal Canadian Air Force, Royal Navy, United States Navy, United States Air Force, North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), Belgium Navy, Royal Danish Navy and Standing NATO Maritime Group 1 represented with units from the Royal Netherlands Navy, Portuguese Navy, Norwegian Navy, and Belgian Navy.

Canadian participants include HMC Ships Fredericton, Ville de Quebec, St. John’s, Shawinigan, and Glace Bay ; NRU Asterix , and Royal Canadian Air Force aircraft from Shearwater, Greenwood, Bagotville, and Ottawa will also support.
