One man was taken to hospital in serious condition after he was rescued from a house fire in St. John’s late Friday night.

Platoon chief Paul Chaytor of the St. John’s Regional Fire Department told the Telegram that the fire was reported to them just before 11 p.m. by someone who had arrived at the central fire station on foot and was only able to initially give a vague location. After a brief search of the nearby neighbourhood, they found smoke coming from a home at 23 Feild Street.

Firefighters entered the smoke-filled house and found the victim inside. He was removed from the home while other firefighters hosed down the blaze in what appeared to be an upstairs bedroom.

The man was placed on a stretcher and treated for a substantial amount of time by four Eastern Health paramedics in the back of an ambulance before he was taken to hospital.

As firefighters cleaned up the scene, a burned mattress and bed frame were thrown out a second-storey window and a burned boxspring was taken out through the front door.

The RNC is investigating the incident.

More details will be provided as they become available.
