CASCUMPEC, P.E.I. — A local watershed group recently collected around 500 kilograms of garbage from a western P.E.I. shoreline.

The Cascumpec Bay Watershed Association Inc. (CBWA) held a beach cleanup on Aug. 18.  Starting in Kildare Capes, staff and volunteers collected trash along the shore at the Gap (Jacques Cartier Provincial Park) and concluded at the harbour in Northport.

The trash was mostly plastic, Styrofoam and rope.

Beach cleanups can reduce litter, protect the ocean and raise awareness about litter and plastic pollution, said the news release from CBWA.

To help eliminate ocean trash in the future, CBWA has built and placed garbage bins for public use at the Gap and four other locations.

CBWA had help at the cleanup from the STAR Program, GoWest P.E.I., Allan Irving and other volunteers
