KENSINGTON, P.E.I. — A Kensington man is the latest Islander to be fined $1,000 for failing to self-isolate after returning to the province.
Kensington police chief Lewis Sutherland told Saltwire Network the man was charged April 2, after police received complaints about the man's actions.
"He had returned from another province on March 28, via the Confederation Bridge where he went through the checkpoint and received information from the health officials at the bridge," Sutherland said.
"He was (later) spotted in a local business."
The chief said the fine is the result of a joint investigation by police and provincial conservation officers, who are aiding traditional law enforcement agencies as they probe coronavirus (COVID-19) self-isolating violations.
"On April 2, conservation officers issued a 63-year-old man a summary offence ticket for $1,000."
The man is charged with failing to comply with an order from the province's chief public health officer.
The first person fined for failing that order during the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19 strain) pandemic was a 27-year-old Summerside man who was charged in the city on March 30, after failing to heed two previous warnings to self-isolate.
Anyone returning from travel outside P.E.I. is being ordered to self-isolate for 14 days. Those who don’t comply with the order face fines of $1,000 for a first offence, $2,000 for a second and $10,000 for any subsequent violation.
