NORTH SYDNEY, N.S. — Cape Breton North MLA Cecil Clarke said a recent meeting with Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney is a positive step toward creating long-term immigration strategies that will benefit the economy and address Cape Breton's declining population.
Clarke, who is also the Progressive Conservative immigration critic, said that last week's legislature meeting focused on strengthening the balance between federal and provincial initiatives to help retain international students and support business development opportunities.
"It was a chance to discuss ways of working with Nova Scotia's immigrant population to stimulate our economy," he said. "There are things we can be doing to attract foreign students and business leaders to our area, but that requires a collaborative effort involving both levels of government."
Clarke said he looks forward to working closely with the minister to help forge stronger relationships with federal agencies, and to improving employment strategies targeted toward those new to Canada.
