CENTRAL BEDEQUE, P.E.I. — Three people were sent to hospital, including one in serious condition, after a head-on collision Thursday evening on Route 1A.
At about 5:30 p.m., emergency crews were called to a collision between a white pick-up truck and a small, dark coloured car.
Kinkora firefighter Michael Lawless was the first on scene and was able to extract a person from one of the vehicles.
The driver of the car was transported to Prince County Hospital to be stabilized, then air-lifted to a Halifax hospital for further care, RCMP Cpl. Nick Doyle said Friday.
The two occupants in the truck were also taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Highway 1A was closed to traffic in both directions for more than an hour between the Hogg Road to Route 171.
At the same time, RCMP was at the scene of a second crash at the roundabout in Traveller's Rest, where highways 1A and 2 meet. No injuries were sustained in that incident.
The Central Bedeque collision remains under investigation. An accident reconstructionist attended the scene, but there are still “too many unknowns” at this time to speculate on the cause, said Doyle.
Police do not believe alcohol was a factor in the collision, but road conditions might have played a role.
Temperatures dropped well below freezing suddenly Thursday afternoon, and roads quickly iced over.
The Kinkora Fire Department, East Prince RCMP and Island EMS all attended the incident in Central Bedeque.
