Local activist groups are encouraging Islanders to display their own Pride flags across P.E.I. on Friday in recognition of International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia.
P.E.I. Inter-Pride, a coalition of local gender and sexual diversity (GSD) organizations who serve 2SLGBTQ+ communities across the Island, will unite on May 17 in response to Alberton town council’s decision not to raise the Pride flag in front of town hall.
Alberton town council made the unanimous decision to deny the request from P.E.I. Inter-Pride to fly the Pride flag, indicating they heard opposition from a couple of people when they previously flew the flag during Pride week last year.
P.E.I. Inter-Pride encourages Islanders to show their solidarity for the 2SLGBTQ+ community by flying Pride flags and homemade signs outside of their homes on Friday.
The group hopes to see a “sea of rainbows” across the Island, to create a symbol of hope, acceptance and resilience.
International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia takes place on May 17 each year and is recognized and celebrated in more than 130 countries around the world.
It was created in 2004 to draw attention to the violence and discrimination experienced by 2SLGBTQ+ community members.
Ceremonial flag raisings
Pflag Canada P.E.I. would like to encourage everyone to show their support for the 2SLGBTQ+ community on the Island by attending one of two ceremonial flag raisings of the Pride flag on May 17:
- 12 p.m. – Summerside town hall
- 12:15 p.m. – Charlottetown town hall
