BORDEN-CARLETON, P.E.I. — There were about two dozen cars lined up at the Confederation Bridge at 11:45 p.m. Thursday, awaiting the beginning of the Atlantic travel bubble.

Christine Arsenault and Grant Clark were waiting in Borden with their camper hitched to their large white pickup.

“Shediac,” they said.

Vehicles from the New Brunswick side began arriving minutes ahead of 12:01 a.m., trickling into the checkpoint a few at a time.

“They’re holding them back on the other side,” said Const. Shannon Hodder with the RCMP.  He was on watch at the checkpoint.

A highway safety truck was posted at the checkpoint entry with its lights flashing.

Soon, vehicles were flowing past in a slow moving ant-trail carrying tired children, happy dogs, luggage and bicycles, campers and anticipation.

The Atlantic travel bubble will allow residents of the four east coast provinces to move freely without a 14-day quarantine.
