The Sadat Refugee Project is in its home stretch.

On Saturday, Nov. 3, the final edition in the series of dinners to raise funds for an Afghan refugee couple to come to live on P.E.I. will take place at Sadat’s Cuisine, 223 University Ave., Charlottetown.

The sit-down dinner runs from 5-7 p.m.

Sayed and Bibi Fazli, the parents of Charlottetown restauranteur Sara Sadat, arrived safely on Sept. 13, after being stranded in Turkey for the past two years. They are settling in with their daughter’s family, and the grandchildren are particularly happy to be with them again.

The families (Fradshams, Hartleys, Thomsons, Goddards with the Sadats) in the small sponsoring group have been working over almost two years to help make this happen. Through a series of special dinners at Sadat’s Cuisine, with the boost of some donations and a raffle of Afghan jewelry by Ann Thurlow, the project is within reach of the full amount required by Immigration Canada to carry the refugees through the first year. The Nov. 3 dinner is expected to push that funding over the top.

The fundraising dinners have been featuring mouth-watering dishes from Sara’s kitchen — a choice of lamb, beef, chicken or vegan, plus flavoured basmati rice, salad and a sweet dessert.

The price is $30 of which $20 sponsors the refugees.

Further contributions are welcome, and any donation of $50 or more is eligible for a tax receipt. Take-away orders also can be made for pick-up between 5-5:30 p.m.

Patrons can phone 902-367-6631 or 902-213-7420 to choose a time and meal choice or to order a take-out meal.
