CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. - The Native Council of P.E.I. (NCPEI) says it is encouraged following the signing of a new Canada-Congress of Aboriginal Peoples (CAP) political accord.
It is a document that represents a stronger relationship between CAP and the federal government.
The agreement includes priorities and objectives such as supporting “the participation of the congress and its provincial affiliates in matters related to the rights, interests and needs of their constituents.”
CAP is one of five National Indigenous Representative Organizations with provincial and territorial affiliate organizations (PTOs), including the Native Council of P.E.I., which directly represents off-reserve status, non-status, Métis and Inuit Aboriginal peoples in P.E.I.
“This accord signals a shift in the recognition of the rights, interests and needs of off-reserve status and non-status Aboriginal peoples in P.E.I. and across Canada,” said Lisa Cooper, president and chief of the Native Council of P.E.I.
