MONTROSE, P.E.I. — Josephine Clements says she’s been receiving calls and online messages from people interested in helping since she posted a plea for a life-saving liver donation for her husband.
Kevin Clements has been struggling with liver disease for five years and his condition has progressively worsened.
He remains on the list in Halifax for a liver transplant from a deceased donor, but no viable liver has been found and, with his condition worsening, the Montrose P.E.I. man has registered with the Toronto General Hospital’s Living Liver Donor Program in hopes of obtaining a portion of a liver from a living donor.
The donor does not have to be related to the recipient but, as a starting point, must have a compatible blood type. Two people with compatible blood types, one of Kevin’s brothers and a brother of Josephine, both living in Ontario, are currently undergoing tests.
On Sunday, Clements had 10 people attend an information meeting to learn more about the testing protocol that would need to be performed before anyone would be considered as a donor.
“I’m getting worse,” Kevin said by phone Monday, acknowledging that, without a transplant, “I’m not going to get better.”
