CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. - Charlottetown’s longest-serving city councillor is looking for another term.
Coun. Mitchell Tweel, first elected to council in 1994, has officially declared his intention to seek re-election in Ward 4 Spring Park.
Voters head to the polls on Nov. 5.
“I would like to continue to serve our area of the city and to work to make it the best possible place it can be to live, attend school and enjoy outdoor sports and recreation activities,’’ Tweel said.
The incumbent councillor said his priorities are safe and attractive streets and neighbourhoods, educational and recreational opportunities for children and youth close to where they live, opportunities for individuals and families to enjoy active recreational pursuits in the city and encouraging arts and culture initiatives for local artists, craftspeople and musicians.
Tweel said during his time on council he has fought to keep St. Jean School open, worked for street and sidewalk replacements on Walthen Drive, Hillcrest Avenue, Orlebar Street, Upper Hillsborough Street, Queen Street, lower Bayfield Street and Chestnut Street, worked for the conversion of former industrial areas in the ward to parks, green spaces and sports fields and supported the revitalization of DesBrisay Park and Community Garden.
Tweel also worked on improving the intersection at Queen and Pond streets and creating a pocket park on that corner, lighting on the Confederation Trail and the replacement of the Charlottetown waterfront boardwalk in Victoria Park and he waterfront areas behind the Culinary Institute and the Delta Hotel.
Tweel is being opposed by Valentine Gomez and Richard Turner.
