CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — A million-dollar lottery ticket that was sold in Charlottetown last year has gone unclaimed.
The Atlantic Lottery Corporation said the Lotto 6/49 ticket, which was sold Dec. 22, 2018 and included a $1-million guaranteed prize win, expired Sunday, Dec. 22, 2019.
Greg Weston, senior communications with the corporation, said the fact the ticket wasn’t claimed is “disappointing”.
“I think we all would have liked to have seen somebody from P.E.I. come forward and get the prize this week.”
However, there is a bit of a silver lining, he said.
“The money goes into an unclaimed prize fund and will go back to players,” he told The Guardian Monday.
“Any unclaimed prizes, big or small, goes into that fund, and then it’s used for future prizes, special draws, that sort of thing, so it does ultimately get returned to players.”
The ticket was sold at a Charlottetown location, but Weston said he couldn’t specify which store.
Weston said unclaimed prizes happen from time to time but said this is “exceptionally rare” when it happens, especially with a large prize.
Since the draw, Atlantic Lottery has been raising awareness about the outstanding prize through social media and news releases.
