CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — The City Diamond in Victoria Park will see some significant upgrades beginning Friday, May 22.
Council passed two resolutions during the monthly meeting in May to award the tenders for City Diamond light poles and fixtures replacement, as well as field upgrades.
City Diamond light system replacement scope of work includes:
- removing the old lighting system,
- installing new poles,
- upgrading the wiring,
- installing new LED light fixtures and
- a new control panel.
The field is also being realigned to meet current standards/requirements for Peewee and Bantam play.
These new lights will provide a higher quality field and the electrical operational costs will be reduced by 50 per cent.
The parks and recreation department is investing $356,000 for light poles and fixtures replacement, as well as $5,520 for engineering and professional fees.
This project is possible with partnership funding from the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP) in the amount of $241,989.
Field upgrades will also be completed , including upgrading City Diamond to meet Peewee dimension requirements and minimal Bantam requirements.
The scope of work for this phase includes:
- extending the sideline fences,
- replacing the outfield fence,
- increasing the infield size,
- adding a pitching mound,
- field conditioner,
- pitching mound bricks,
- new batter’s boxes and
- additional fencing to meet safety requirements.
The investment for this work is $141,777.75 for the field upgrades and $14,374 for engineering and professional fees. The field upgrade work is scheduled to take place over the next month or so.
The overall total investment from the city is about $500,000 and all the work is scheduled to be complete by the end of July 2020.
During this construction over the next few months, the parks and recreation department is advising park users to use caution around the construction zone of Victoria Park.
Signage and barricades will be in place and periodically there will be trucks moving materials in this area.
No major disruption to traffic is anticipated at this time.
