CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. - UPEI’s student union president has resigned abruptly without giving cause.

“There was no reason provided in the statement,’’ acting president Taya Nabuurs said of Hammad Ahmed resignation, which was delivered in a letter Sunday.

“It’s certainly not an easy decision to make.’’

Nabuurs said Ahmed “dedicated a lot of time’’ to the student union since assuming the role of president in May 2017.

Ahmed states in his resignation letter that he truly regrets any inconvenience his sudden departure may cause by leaving several months before his term as president was up.

“I want to thank the organization and its membership for the tremendous opportunity to have served in this position,’’ states the letter, according to the Cadre, the student-run online publication at the university.

Ahmed, a fourth-year engineering student, started at UPEI in 2014 after beginning his university career at Al Yamamah University in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Nabuurs says a byelection will be held adding she has no plans to run for the position of student union president.
