SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — The citywide power outage Thursday was due to a protection relay that tripped Summerside's main circuit breaker.

Summerside Coun. Justin Doiron said onhis  Facebook page that the circuit breaker was tripped during a maintenance procedure to repair a faulty switch.

"The fault indicated there was a problem within the substation and staff had to do a complete inspection of all the equipment before reinstating the main breaker," Doiron wrote. "This also meant we could not start the generators until the fault was found or cleared."

After the inspection was complete, staff attempted to engage the breaker and the same fault occurred again.

Friday, staff will download the events from the equipment to find out why the fault could not be cleared and will also repair the faulty switch staff originally intended to fix.

"...By the end of the day if all goes well we will be back to normal," said Doiron. "Thank you to all the people who entertained us with all the wild guesses as to what they thought was happening!"

Doiron was referring to several residents comments on the city's Facebook post, describing what they were doing when the power went out.

We are currently experiencing a City wide power outage. Crews are working to restore power as soon as possible. At this point there is no estimated time frame.
