SOURIS, P.E.I. — The RCMP have confirmed a male is in custody and the 'situation' involving a potentially armed person in Souris has ended.

The 25-year-old Souris man, who barricaded himself inside a home on Cantwell Crescent in Souris, remains in custody and is facing firearms charges and charges of uttering threats, mischief and an outstanding warrant for his arrest on unrelated matters said a statement released by the RCMP on the morning of May 9.

The arrest took place after negotiators were able to convince the man to surrender to police without further incident just after 11 p.m., May 8.

Earlier in the day, the RCMP asked Souris-area residents to stay indoors due to a potentially armed and barricaded person. The announcement that the person was apprehended came just before midnight on May 8.

"No injuries to report - thank you for your assistance and patience," the announcement said.

The initial email was sent out just after 6 p.m. on Friday, citing the incident as a "situation," and a follow-up report stated that qualified personnel were on a secured scene shortly after 7 p.m. According to The Guardian's conversation with a representative of the RCMP Kings County detachment, the situation was contained to one area but the stay-home order was to ensure the public's safety.

According to a representative of the Souris Volunteer Fire Department, the situation was unfolding near the Souris Hospital as of 7 p.m. The fire chief was unavailable for comment as they were on the scene, the representative said.

When contacted, the hospital's administrator said they were told not to comment.

At about 8:50 p.m., the RCMP reported the situation was ongoing and requested that no photos or information be posted, as it may put police at risk and provide information to the person involved. At about 11:50 p.m., a report stated that the person was apprehended and further info will be released at a later date.
