As of 8 p.m., there are more than 24,500 Maritime Electric customers without power across the province.

A message posted at 8:20 p.m. on the utility's website says the storm's sustained high winds across P.E.I. is causing more damage and crews continue to find issues. They are restoring power in pockets across the Island, but it’s slow going.

Maritime Electric will provide another update by 1 a.m.

Maritime Electric's contact centre is open and available by calling 1-800-670-1012.

Spokesperson Kim Griffin said having customers call in and letting Maritime Electric know what they are seeing has been a big help.

Griffin added that it would be well into Friday before all power is restored.

Updates will be provided on an hourly basis.

Another wind warning was issued for Thursday evening. Environment Canada expects strong northwest winds gusting to 100 km/h this evening, but says the winds will diminish after midnight.

Environment Canada ended its winter storm warning as of 4:30 p.m. Thursday, but issued a storm-surge warning in its place. Higher than normal water levels can be expected this evening for most coastal areas of the province.

For north-facing coastlines of the Island, these high-water levels combined with heavy pounding surf will continue to give coastal flooding until the tides recede later this evening.

High waves combined with the surge may cause damage along the coast.

Environment Canada advises to stay away from affected shorelines and says people close to the shoreline should stay on the lookout for worsening conditions.
