A 21-year-old Charlottetown man was arrested early Tuesday morning for driving at a speed in excess of 100 km per hour above the posted limit.
The vehicle was travelling at speeds between 190 and 199 km per hour on the new Cornwall bypass (Trans-Canada Highway 1) when it was stopped by the Queens District RCMP at about 1:20 a.m.
The driver and a female passenger were the only occupants of the vehicle.
The incident resulted in a mandatory 24-hour impoundment of the vehicle under the Highway Traffic Act and a summary offence ticket which carries a voluntary payment option of $1,050.
A release issued Tuesday by the RCMP stated there is no excuse for blatantly disregarding speed limits. The posted limits are set and enforced to keep streets, roads and highways as safe as possible for all to use.
“Speeding at any rate places yourself, your passengers, other motorists and pedestrians at an unnecessary risk,” said the release.
