Monday marked a dark anniversary for Prince Edward Island.
It was 20 years ago on April 20, 1995, at 3:15 p.m., that a bomb exploded outside of historic Province House in Charlottetown.
Roger Bell planted the pipe bomb.
Debris from the explosion imploded 10 windows of the historic chamber and hurled bricks blocks away.
MLAs were forced to crawl through broken glass to evacuate the building. None of them was injured.
However, a man sitting on a bench outside the legislature suffered a broken leg and severed blood vessels after being struck by flying debris.
For his part, the bomber said he was mad at the leaders of society.
“I think my mission was simply revenge at society,” Bell said years later.
“There was certainly no long-term plan . . . I suppose I wanted to attract attention. I had no thoughts of doing a great amount of damage. I wanted to cause fear, I suppose.”
