CORNWALL, P.E.I. — The main street that runs through Cornwall has a fitting new name – Main Street.

Residents were presented with Unity Street or Main Street – names whittled down by council – as the options to call a stretch of Trans-Canada Highway currently running through the town.

Main Street got the nod by a margin of roughly 70 to 30.

The official switch to Main Street will take place with the completion of the bypass project that will move the Trans-Canada Highway west of Charlottetown around the town, said Deputy Mayor Cory Stevenson.

Stevenson feels the name fits.

“Most towns have a main street of some sort,’’ he said.

“Everybody seemed to be comfortable with the term Main Street.’’
