THREE RIVERS, P.E.I. — The municipality has agreed to form an economic development committee to address its history of underspending in that area.

The decision was made during a Three Rivers council meeting in Georgetown on Jan. 11. Last month, it was reported the municipality spent less than 20 per cent of what it had budgeted toward economic development in the 2019-20 year.

Coun. Ronnie Nicholson helped push for a committee, believing it would help to find funding opportunities Three Rivers is missing. As well, it should include members of the public with relevant skills, he said.

"I really believe that we need these local boots on the ground."

At least one councillor would be part of the committee, and it was discussed that meetings ought to be arranged with other economic development groups across Three Rivers that existed before its 2018 amalgamation.

"We don't want to duplicate anything they've already done," Coun. Gerard Holland said. "We want to work with them."
