Theft and mischief lead to jail for Summerside woman

SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — A 35-year-old P.E.I. woman appeared in provincial court recently to answer to charges of theft and mischief.

Melanie Ann Russell pleaded guilty to two counts of theft under $5,000, mischief under $5,000, failure to comply with probation order and failure to attend court.

Russell took items from the Circle K Irving in Summerside on Nov. 13. Then, in January, Russell damaged a washing machine in a Summerside building. In March, Russell took four bags of donated clothes from the Salvation Army in Summerside.

In April, Russell was found in a store she was prohibited from entering due to a probation order. Then in June, she didn’t go to court.

Altogether, Russell was sentenced to 135 days, 30 to be served concurrently. She was given credit for 58 days and so will serve another 47 days.

After her release, Russell will be subject to two years of probation.
