The Guardian's mayoralty debate set for Oct. 24 on Eastlink TV

Charlottetown residents will get a chance to hear first-hand from the four candidates who are seeking the capital city’s top job as The Guardian hosts a live, televised mayor’s debate Oct. 24.

The debate will be held at the W.A. Murphy Student Centre at UPEI at 7 p.m. The 90-minute debate will also be broadcast on Eastlink TV.

The four candidates – Philip Brown, Kim Devine, Jamie Larkin and Cecil Villard – will square off about the issues that Charlottetown residents said they wanted to hear the political leaders discuss.

The public is welcome to attend the debate. Those attending are asked to be there early as seating is limited. Everyone is asked to be seated by 6:45 p.m.

Capital city residents, and in fact all Islanders, will also be able to take part in the discussion on The Guardian's website at www.theguardian.pe.ca. Some of the comments will be part or the live broadcast.


The Guardian's Mayoralty Debate

- Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2018 at 7 p.m.

- Watch it live on Eastlink TV, Ch. 10 and in high definition Ch. 610. Highlights of the debate will be posted to The Guardian's website following the debate.

- Follow the discussion online at www.theguardian.pe.ca

- Be there in person at the W.A. Murphy Student Centre at UPEI in Charlottetown. Seating is limited. Doors open at 6 p.m. Everyone is asked to be seated by 6:45 p.m.

The show airs live at 7 p.m.


Wayne Thibodeau, the show's host and senior producer, says he's pleased to be able to offer Charlottetown residents an opportunity to see all four leaders discuss their vision for the capital city.

"The Guardian's debates are an established, pivotal point in election campaigns,” said Thibodeau. “We have already had people reaching out to us about dates and times for the debate. On Oct. 24, the candidates for mayor will get an opportunity to speak directly to the thousands of capital city voters and voters will get a chance to hear directly from the four people who want to lead their city.”

The questions will come from voters.

Bruce MacLean, manager of Eastlink community programming in P.E.I., said Eastlink is proud to partner with The Guardian for the broadcast of this prime time special.

"We are honoured that all four candidates have agreed to participate in this debate," said MacLean. "The broadcast is another tool voters can use to help them make an informed decision when city residents go to the polls on Nov. 5."
