While the start date is different than usual, Island restaurants will once again take part in an annual event that celebrates local burger creations.

The 10th annual P.E.I. Burger Love launches Sept. 1 and will run for 45 days until Oct. 15.

The campaign, which usually happens during the month of April, is running a bit longer this year because it was delayed twice due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Something new this year is that burger entries can feature a choice of local beef, pork, chicken, seafood or in-house veggie patties.

Each restaurant has chosen the lead ingredient for their burger and this new component is expected to bring even more hungry fans out to sample Burger Love and support local.

Ron Maynard, president of the P.E.I. Federation of Agriculture, said his department is excited to be part of this year’s campaign.

“Burger Love allows the farming community to once again showcase the great local food we produce across the Island that goes into (and on top of) each and every burger.”

Of the 76 burgers this year, 40 are part of the Give Back Burger initiative, which gives $1 of every burger sold to Anderson House, an emergency shelter for women and children impacted by family violence.

In 2019, $86,038 was raised for Anderson House and organizers are hoping that this year’s expanded campaign will further help this important organization.

From all the unique burgers created, one entry will be crowned the 2020 Most Loved Burger based on online voting by consumers.

Over the previous nine campaigns, there have been more than one million burgers sold and $13.9 million in sales of burgers alone; not counting sides, beverages or tips.
