CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. - A Summerside man who abandoned a stolen van in Bonshaw on Christmas Eve was sentenced Wednesday to five months in jail.
James Patrick David Sudsbury, 25, appeared before Chief Judge Nancy Orr in provincial court in Charlottetown where he pleaded guilty to possessing a stolen vehicle and failing to attend court.
Crown attorney Jeff MacDonald told the court that on Dec. 24, 2017, someone stole a 1994 GMC van from a parking lot in Dieppe, N.B.
The police found the van in Bonshaw later that day.
MacDonald said surveillance video showed someone wearing clothing that matched Sudsbury’s getting in the van.
The police also found a fingerprint that was a match for Sudsbury in the van.
Sudsbury denied it to the police but couldn’t explain how his fingerprint got in the van, MacDonald said.
The matter was initially supposed to go to trial, but Sudsbury didn’t show up for court and was later arrested.
Orr gave Sudsbury credit of six days for time spent in custody.
