CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — A P.E.I. man who pleaded guilty to 14 charges that included stealing high-end headphones and using stolen credit cards was sentenced recently to six months of house arrest.
Keighan Michael Scott, 33, recently appeared before Judge John Douglas in provincial court in Charlottetown where he was sentenced.
Reading from an agreed statement of facts, Crown attorney Lisa Goulden detailed Scott’s crime spree that involved using several stolen cards for a total of more than $1,200.
The court heard Scott stole headphones from a Rogers store and two pairs from The Source worth a total of $1,110.
During another incident, Scott went to a Shoppers Drug Mart where he stole a laptop, left and returned a few minutes later to take second computer.
Federal Crown attorney Andrea Leclair Shefler told the court Scott was also arrested after an incident at Red Shores where the police saw him flushing drugs down a toilet in the women’s bathroom.
Scott also breached several court orders and didn’t show up for two court appearances.
'It wasn't stopping'
Goulden told the court Scott’s crime spree totaled about $3,000 in the span of less than two weeks.
“It wasn’t stopping unless Mr. Scott was taken into custody,” she said.
Scott’s spree activity was destructive, Goulden said, adding that the odds of anyone seeing restitution money weren’t good.
“Very, very slim,” she said.
Before hearing his sentence, Scott addressed the court to say he works, makes good money and isn’t someone who steals.
“I’m very ashamed and embarrassed of my actions,” he said.
Scott said none of the offences would have happened if it weren’t for his addiction.
Douglas said he gave Scott a conditional sentence with electronic monitoring so the accused could get back to work and deal with his underlying issues.
He also fined Scott $250 for the drug offence.
Scott will be on probation for 18 months after he finishes serving his sentence and he must pay $3,005.36 in restitution.
