Sentencing in P.E.I. woman's infanticide case delayed until Nov. 22

CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. —

A P.E.I. woman who pleaded guilty to three counts of infanticide will be back in court later this month after her sentencing was delayed.

Rayner was last in court on Sept. 30 when the Crown argued for a sentence of more than seven years in prison on three counts of infanticide, one count of concealing the body of a child and one count of theft.

Shannon Dawn Rayner, 40, was scheduled to be sentenced Wednesday but the matter was adjourned until Nov. 22.

The defence is seeking a three-year sentence.

Charlottetown police started their investigation into two of Rayner’s pregnancies in 2017 after receiving information from obstetrics and gynecology services and Health P.E.I.

Two of the babies’ bodies were later found in Rayner’s mother’s home after she contacted police and the third was in a shed on the mother’s property.

Rayner remains in custody while she awaits sentencing.
