Roger Augustine of Eel Ground First Nation has been acclaimed AFN Regional Chief for New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island.

He has been re-elected for a three-year term during elections held in Charlottetown on Thursday.

Augustine was nominated by Chief Brian Francis of Abegweit First Nation on the Island.

This is the first time the regional chief election has been held on P.E.I.

The regional chief is one of 10 and sits on the executive committee of the Assembly of First Nations.

Regional Chiefs are elected every three years by chiefs in their regions.

There are two First Nations on P.E.I., Abegweit First Nation and Lennox Island First Nation, and 15 in New Brunswick.

Augustine, a Mi'kmaq from New Brunswick, was chief of Eel Ground First Nation from 1980 to 1996. Prior to that, he served on council for four years.
