CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. - A 35-year-old man who was caught with a shotgun in his vehicle after someone reported a possible impaired driver on the Wood Islands ferry was sentenced recently to 30 days in jail.

Joel Robert Worth appeared before Chief Judge Nancy Orr in provincial court in Charlottetown for sentencing after previously pleading guilty to possessing a weapon without a licence and breaching his probation.

During a court appearance in July, the court heard Kings District RCMP stopped Worth’s vehicle after the RCMP in Nova Scotia alerted them to a possible impaired driver on the ferry.

The RCMP didn’t proceed with an impaired driving charge, but a check found the licence plate on Worth’s vehicle was stolen, his driver’s licence was inactive and he was on two probation orders.

A search of Worth’s vehicle found a locked case with a 12-gauge shotgun and ammunition.

Worth didn’t have a licence for the shotgun.

On Monday, Orr sentenced Worth to 30 days in jail for possessing the weapon without a licence and 30 days for breaching his probation, to be served concurrently.

With credit for time spent in custody, it left Worth with 23 days still to serve.

Worth will also be under a weapons prohibition for five years.
