CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — P.E.I.’s chief public health officer said Islanders need to be grateful and thankful for the limited impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19) in the province.
Speaking during a news conference this afternoon, Dr. Heather Morrison said P.E.I. did experience COVID-19 but because of measures put in place “we have all together made a difference.”
Morrison seemed get choked up and fight back tears as she asked Islanders to continue to be patient and kind.
Today is the first day of phase two of the province’s plan to scale back public health restrictions.
During this phase, households can gather with up to five people inside their home and 10 outside.
Morrison said some businesses that will also be opening include retail outlets, greenhouses, car washes, hairdressers, barbers, pest control, day cares, emergency and urgent dental care.
Premier Dennis King also spoke during the news conference and said that during the past few weeks the province started the process to re-open the Island and it’s not a process to go back to normal.
King said the changes will continue for a long time and P.E.I. has done very well by following a careful plan.
Those decisions were made knowing they would be temporary and that the pathway back wouldn’t be easy, King said.
He also said every government decision that is made should be subject to public scrutiny and discussion and he asked that be done with civility and kindness.
