OTTAWA - An Island veterinarian and a former P.E.I. lieutenant-governor have been appointed to the Order of Canada.
Gov. Gen. Julie Payette announced 103 new appointments on Dec. 27, including Dr. Ian Robert Dohoo and Frank Lewis.
Dohoo, professor emeritus, adjunct and graduate faculty at the Atlantic Veterinary College in Charlottetown, joined the AVC faculty in 1985 and retired in 2012. He was granted the honour for his contributions to veterinary and human epidemiology in developed and developing countries.
Prior to serving as P.E.I.’s lieutenant-governor from 2011 to 2007, Lewis was an active member of the Island’s business community for 50 years, including as a broadcaster, entrepreneur and volunteer. He was granted the honour for his contributions to the economic, social and cultural well-being of the province.
Recipients will be invited to accept their insignia at a ceremony to be held at a later date.
Created in 1967, the Order of Canada is one of the country’s highest honours, recognizing people whose service shapes society; whose innovations ignite imaginations; and whose compassion unites communities.
Close to 7,000 people from all sectors of society have been invested into the Order of Canada. The six-point white enamel insignia they wear symbolizes Canada’s northern heritage and diversity because no two snowflakes are alike.
Appointments are made by the Governor General on the recommendation of the advisory council for the Order of Canada.
