Cindy Day, chief meteorologist with the SaltWire Network, said the long-range forecast is not looking promising.

“I don’t really think you guys are going to have much luck,’’ Day said Thursday. “We have a really warm air mass coming in.’’

This cold snap is coming to an end with daytime highs climbing to 5 C and 6 C on Monday and Tuesday.

Things do cool off for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. There is some precipitation in the forecast but not enough to qualify for a white Christmas.

Day says the criteria for a white Christmas is two centimetres of snow or more measured at the Charlottetown Airport’s weather station.

“Then, there will be a little drop on Wednesday and Thursday. That’s going to be a cold front. Maybe that cold front will bring you a dusting Thursday night into Friday morning (but) not enough to give you that two centimetres.’’

She noted that P.E.I. may see some snow squalls in the wake of the nor’easter that is currently pounding the east coast of the United States, but whatever falls will get washed away when temperatures climb early next week.

However, there is hope for a white Boxing Day.

Day said there is a little system coming through on Saturday morning that could bring a couple of centimetres of snow with it.

“So, you’ve got a greater chance of getting Boxing Day snow than Christmas snow.’’
