CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — A P.E.I. woman who repeatedly stabbed a stranger’s car window before telling the victim she had the wrong person likely won’t get any more jail time.
Katie Brianna Brewer, 23, appeared before Judge John Douglas in provincial court in Charlottetown on Thursday where she pleaded guilty to possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose and two counts of damaging property.
Crown attorney Lisa Goulden told the court that on Aug. 15 at around 12:20 a.m. a woman was parked waiting for her friend to come out of a residence.
Goulden said Brewer approached the victim’s vehicle while holding a knife and started stabbing the windows.
During the incident, the victim had been honking her horn as she tried to get help.
Goulden told the court that when the complainant rolled her window down slightly, Brewer said she thought the victim was someone else.
Brewer then walked away.
In a separate incident, the police were called to a disturbance at Brewer’s residence on Aug. 28 where they found her throwing things from a window.
Goulden said some of the items landed on a car below and caused $4,330.04 in damage, including cracking the windshield.
Brewer, who appeared to be under the influence and was hallucinating, told police she had cooked herself some meth.
The court heard Brewer didn’t know the victim and the vehicle just happened to be parked under her window.
Defence lawyer Conor Mullin told the court Brewer, who has been in custody since her arrest, is enrolled at UPEI and wants to be able to attend school.
Before hearing her sentence, Brewer addressed the court and said she knew what she did was wrong.
Brewer also said she will address her addiction issues.
Douglas only sentenced Brewer for the Aug. 28 matter and gave her a suspended sentence with probation for one year, which included a condition she undergo any counselling or treatment as directed.
She must also pay $4,330.04 in restitution.
Brewer has been released from custody and Douglas adjourned sentencing on the rest of the matters until Oct. 10, at which point she isn’t expected to get any further jail time.
