For many students in P.E.I., Tuesday was the first day of the new school year.

This will be the first time most students have been physically in class since the beginning of the coronavirus (COVID-19 strain) pandemic in mid-March.

Most students returned to school Sept. 8, and the rest will return Sept. 9.

Belfast Consolidated School welcomed back 130 students on Tuesday, although one of those students has chosen to be home-schooled for the fall semester.

John Munro, principal at Belfast, said the morning drop off, including buses and parents, went seemlessly. He noted that he boarded each bus to let students know where they would be going and said all students were not only wearing masks but wanted to show off some of their fancy designs.

Belfast is operating with three cohorts, or groups that don't mingle with the others, which will dictate how things are run for recesses and gym class. Students are tp wear masks on the buses, in the hallways and anywhere where physically distancing is not possible.

Students and teachers seemed thrilled to be back in class for the first in seven months. The students The Guardian spoke to all said they really missed seeing their friends.
