CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — A retired sheriff and former TV host who is facing multiple charges that include allegations of sexual assault has had his case adjourned until January.

William Vernon Acorn, 83, was not in provincial court in Charlottetown Thursday morning where his lawyer asked Judge John Douglas for an adjournment.

Defence lawyer Brendan Hubley told the court he had only recently received the disclosure of evidence in the case.

The charges against Acorn include four counts of sexual assault along with allegations of sexual interference, invitation to sexual touching, uttering a threat and unlawful storage of a firearm.

Acorn was the host of cable television show “Bill’s Country Jamboree” and in 2012 he received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, which honours significant contributions and achievements by Canadians.

His next court date is scheduled for Jan. 22.

A publication ban prevents the release of any details that could identify any complainant in the case.
