P.E.I. senator speaks at global workshop

Charlottetown Senator Percy Downe, third from left, speaks at the recent Global Parliamentary Workshop at the World Bank and IMF annual meetings in Washington on a panel about taxation as a tool to reducing inequalities. Downe said when the wealthiest Canadians move their money to offshore tax havens they undermine the tax system, thus posing a risk to social programs. He added that people who seek health care in Canada for themselves and their families but don’t pay their share of taxes deprive that same health-care system of much-needed resources. Also pictured, from left, are Vjosa Osmany, MP, Kosovo; Ruud de Mooij, fiscal affairs department, IMF; and, Senator Hodan M. Osman. Downe is also the vice-chairman of the Parliamentary Network on the World Bank and IMF.
