Charlottetown Senator Percy Downe spoke at a recent Global Parliamentary Workshop at the World Bank and IMF annual meetings in Washington.
He participated in a panel about taxation as a tool to reducing inequalities. Downe said when the wealthiest Canadians move their money to offshore tax havens, they undermine the tax system, thus posing a risk to social programs. He added that people who seek health care in Canada for themselves and their families but don’t pay their share of taxes deprive that same health-care system of much-needed resources.
Downe is also the vice-chairman of the Parliamentary Network on the World Bank and IMF.
