CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — A Cuban man who lives in P.E.I. was sentenced recently to 30 days in jail after pleading guilty to assaulting a woman.

Renier Lorenzo Perez Almeida, 31, appeared before Chief Judge Nancy Orr in provincial court in Charlottetown where he entered a guilty plea.

The court heard Almeida kicked the woman in the hip, leg and lower back before hitting her on the top of the head several times.

Crown attorney Jeff MacDonald told the court the victim went to the hospital where a medical exam showed bruising on her leg.

The matter was originally scheduled for a preliminary inquiry, but that didn’t proceed because of Almeida’s guilty plea.

MacDonald said the victim expressed a great deal of relief about not having to testify.

The court heard Almeida is a permanent resident, and a conviction with a sentence of less than six months in jail wouldn’t affect his residency status.

In sentencing Almeida, Orr gave him credit of 10 days for time spent in custody after his arrest, leaving him with 20 days still to serve.

Almeida will be on probation for 18 months with conditions that include no contact with the victim unless his probation officer consents.
