The Queens District RCMP is cracking down on traffic safety in the Town of Cornwall.

Officers performed a community traffic enforcement initiative in Cornwall on Monday, May 25, which resulted in more than 40 drivers being given summary offence tickets for various violations of the Highway Traffic Act.

The vast majority of the drivers ticketed were not residents of Cornwall. Greater than 80 per cent of the violators resided in other communities and were travelling through Cornwall on their way to and from home.

Recently, residents of the town had voiced concern about traffic safety in specific areas of their community. A number of complaints were received regarding what residents felt where obvious traffic offences, including speeding, failing to stop at stop signs and using handheld devices while driving.

Queens District RCMP is asking P.E.I. motorists to be considerate and respectful in obeying the rules of the road and to do their part to contribute to the safety of other motorists and pedestrians as summer nears and the weather improves. In addition, the Covid-19 restrictions have led to more people going for walks and drives when normally they would be at work or in school.
