NDP Leader Joe Byrne will stand for nomination as the party’s candidate for District 12, the provincial riding of Charlottetown-Victoria Park.

The nomination meeting is set for 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 23, at Murphy’s Community Centre, Room 207. Registration is at 6:30 p.m.

Byrne is a long-time activist for social justice who convincingly took the leadership of Island New Democrats at their April convention. Apart from his work with new Canadians at the P.E.I. Association for Newcomers to Canada and with young people as a driving instructor, he is known for his community organizing efforts, earlier in the Caribbean, and for years across Prince Edward Island. He has a record of active involvement in the Latin American Mission Program, with the Cooper Institute and a number of other service organizations.

Byrne campaigned in the federal Charlottetown riding for two elections and served for years on the national council of the NDP.

“I respect people, persons of all stripes,” he says. “Social justice is what drives me, and I truly believe I can work constructively as an MLA to help others and achieve fairness in our Island society.”
