P.E.I. legions look for new, returning members as COVID-19 impacts fundraising

Dominion Command vice-president Owen Parkhouse is hopeful the financial fortunes of legion branches will improve as the pandemic has left at least four P.E.I. branches, including those in Summerside and Charlottetown, at great risk of closing permanently.

With weddings cancelled and halls operating at reduced capacity, legion branches across P.E.I. are focusing on membership growth and retention.

The impact of COVID-19 on Island legions’ ability to generate revenue makes membership renewal this year more important than ever, says Owen Parkhouse, first vice-president of the P.E.I. Command Royal Canadian Legion.

“Membership renewals and new memberships are essential to keep legions running,” said Parkhouse. “Not all members volunteer but membership helps to pay for operation costs of the legion. Membership also keeps the legions viable.”

New and renewed memberships can be obtained through local legion branches or online at Legion.ca by Dec. 31. Membership is approximately $50 per year and is open to everyone.

Military service is not a requirement.

There are currently 2,000 legion members on P.E.I.
