A “significant increase” in market price is being blamed for a four-cent-per-litre unscheduled hike in diesel and home heating oil overnight.

The Island Regulatory and Appeals Commission says diesel prices at self-serve outlets will now range from 143.6 to 144.8 cents per litre.

The maximum price for furnace oil be 102.6 cents per litre.

The new prices went into effect today.

“Seasonally related increased consumption for both furnace oil and diesel have contributed to this situation,” the commission said in a statement.

Prices also increased in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.

There was no change in the prices for gas or propane.

This is an unscheduled price adjustment. The next schedule price adjustment is on Oct. 15.
