P.E.I.’s fisheries industry is getting a boost with $3.1 million in funding from the federal and provincial governments announced Wednesday.
The funding from the Atlantic fisheries fund will go to nine projects in P.E.I. that focus on the implementation of innovative technologies to improve productivity and sustainability within the aquaculture, harvesting and seafood processing sectors.
Those sectors contribute $590 million to the province’s economy and employ up to 8,000 people at peak production.
P.E.I. Mussel King is receiving the most funding at $1 million, followed by Seafood 2000, which is receiving $926,400 from the fund.
The funding comes from the $400-million Atlantic fisheries fund with 70 per cent coming from the federal government and 30 per cent from that Atlantic provinces.
Eligible projects must focus on innovation, infrastructure and science partnerships.
