CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — The chairman of Charlottetown’s parks, recreation and leisure committee wants to team up with former NHLer and UPEI Panthers’ star Joel Ward.

Coun. Mitchell Tweel said he read an article in The Guardian recently where Ward talked about the racism he encountered after scoring an overtime goal for the Washington Capitals in 2012.

Tweel said Ward is an ambassador for not only the Charlottetown university but for the entire province and Island children should learn from him.

“What I’d like to do is bring back Joel when we’re out of the COVID-19 situation ... and I’d like to form a partnership with our city schools and have Joel go in and talk to them ... and be a real inspiration,’’ Tweel said.
