The Weather Network is forecasting a normal summer for Prince Edward Island.
Meteorologist Gina Dressler said Monday their models indicate normal conditions in terms of precipitation and temperatures.
“It will probably be above
normal as you head into the eastern half of the Island,’’ Ressler said.
However, an active jet stream and what meteorologists call “a blocking pattern’’ could create a bit of a roller-coaster ride.
“That usually corresponds to more up-and-down-type weather patterns,’’ she said of the jet stream.
Add in those blocking patterns and the province could see stretches of either cool or warm and dry weather.
In terms of temperatures, expect June to hover around
20 degrees Celsius with July
and August being slightly warmer.
As for precipitation, Dressler said the Island shouldn’t get any more or less than usual.
Charlottetown, for example, receives about 260 millimetres and that isn’t expected to fluctuate much.
“That doesn’t mean that we couldn’t get a couple of days where it’s really soggy and
unsettled but it looks like this
will be balanced out with
periods of more fair weather as well.’’
That active jet stream could mean some hot and sticky weather is ahead.
“We might see periods of above-normal humidity, especially over eastern portions of the Island . . . but it should be balanced out with cooler and drier periods as well.’’
Ressler said The Weather Network predicts a less than active hurricane season for Atlantic Canada.
“This is because of the potential return of El Nino as we head into summer and fall. About half the models are predicting the return to El Nino and that tends to suppress tropical activity in the Atlantic.’’
However, it has felt anything but tropical lately.
A big low-pressure system
has plopped itself right off the East Coast, meaning cool and cloudy weather until the weekend.
“Heading into the weekend, (P.E.I.) will rebound a bit.’’
