CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — A P.E.I. man who cut a seat in a taxi and threw items that included a debit machine out the window during a ride was recently given a suspended sentence.
Colin Junior Adams appeared before Chief Judge Nancy Orr in provincial court in Charlottetown where he pleaded guilty to damaging property.
Crown attorney Nathan Beck told the court that on Sept. 21 a taxi driver reported to the RCMP that after dropping off three men he picked up at a Charlottetown bar, he noticed one of his vehicle’s seats was cut open.
The driver reported his debit machine and phone were also missing.
Beck said the police investigated and determined Adams cut the seat and at some point during the trip he threw the phone, a portable radio and the debit machine out the window.
The total amount of the loss to the taxi driver was $1,210.
Beck also told the court Adams had initially agreed to take a polygraph test but later admitted he was responsible for the damage and lost items.
Before sentencing Adams, Orr said it was a pretty senseless offence.
“It’s a pretty expensive night out,” she said.
With the suspended sentence, Adams will be on probation for one year, he must pay $1,210 in restitution and write an apology letter to the victim.
Adams must also perform 50 hours of community service.
