Fixing one of the more confusing intersections in Charlottetown is top priority for public works this year.
A roundabout will soon connect Belvedere Avenue, Brackley Point Road and St. Peters Road, commonly referred to as the Vogue Optical intersection.
Whether motorists are actually driving on it sometime this year depends on when federal infrastructure money starts flowing down to municipalities from the Build Canada Fund.
"Right now, we are in final design, basically waiting for word from Build Canada when we can apply,'' said Coun. Terry Bernard, chairman of the city's public works committee. "That's our number one project, right now, through public works.''
The city still has one piece of property left to purchase before work starts, but that is expected to happen soon. Ongoing conversations have also been taking place with land owners who will be affected.
Bernard said the city believes the federal money will be moving fairly quickly, and if it does, the roundabout could be finished before the year is out. However, if it takes until mid-summer to go through the application and tender process, then construction of the actual roundabout could be pushed into 2017.
Bernard said the department would like to at least start work this year. That involves replacing water and sewer lines below the road surface, similar to what took place at the Mount Edward Road-Allen Street roundabout.
The city is also looking at changes to another confusing intersection where Longworth Avenue, Euston Street and Weymouth Street meet, also known as the Ken's Corner intersection.
Consultants will be looking at the intersection and coming up with a plan to redesign it.
